Autistic or With Autism?
You know how people talk in different ways?
Well, let's talk about how people talk about autism.
Some people like to use the words "Autistic person", it's sort of like when we say, "Brazilian", "Chinese", or "gifted" to talk about different parts of who someone is.
But, there are other people who prefer to say "person with autism". They do this because they want to show that the person is important before talking about autism. It's like saying "person with glasses" or "person with a hat."
Now, you might be wondering, why do some autistic people don't like the second way of talking? Well, it's because they think saying "person with autism" makes it sound like you can take away the autism from them, like taking off a hat.
But that's not true. They believe that autism is a part of who they are, just like our skin color is a part of us. Autism is not a bad thing, it's just a different way their brains work.
When we say "Autistic person", we're saying that being Autistic is a natural and important part of them. We're not trying to hide it or make it seem bad. It's like saying "happy person" or "creative person". It's one of the things that makes them special.
